Persuasive Speech

Nowadays, being just good is not enough to be competitive – everybody wants to be the best. No matter what field you are in, you want to stand out feeling the pressure to excel; this is particularly so with professional sport and bodybuilding. Everybody of you have seen super muscular and ripped guys at the gyms who demonstrate stunning results in bench pressing and other types of exercises. They may claim that they are natural, but in most cases they satisfy their desire for fame and recognition with using steroids. It is true that nature dispenses intellectual and physical abilities not equally, but can we allow drugs to level the playing field? So, the question is whether the joy of winning at any cost is worth the side effects.

Doping is not something that we can just accept in sports. Victory is precious only if it is gained in a fair way. Drugs taken by some athletes take the opportunities away from other players. It is not the thing to do if you want to stay competitive and impress others. This advantage is unfair and humiliating for both sides. Remember that being against steroids does not mean looking for excuses why other guys are ahead of you in sports. Extensive use of substances that enhance the performance alters people’s lives in a way they never expect.

According to the preliminary data on steroids long-term use, it increases the risk of heart attack and damages the heart muscles. Those people who were the first to abuse steroids about thirty years ago now have reached the age when the risks start to be evident. Anabolic steroids cause muscle pain, blood clots, liver damage, masculinizing effects on women and enlargement of breasts in men (Kroll). You may say that steroids are different from other drugs as they do not have the same evident damaging effect on the brain. However, long-term use of anabolic steroids leads to aggression, paranoid states, delusions, and violence (DrugFacts: Anabolic Steroids | National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)).

Are you not frightened with the fact that not only elite athletes put themselves at risk? The percentage of those who abuse such drugs now amounts to about 1 percent of the mankind (Butterworth). Teenagers are at the greatest risk since steroid abuse leads to depressions, uncontrolled changes of hormone levels, mood swings and even suicides. Is the short-term benefit worth losing your good mood and sacrificing your long-term well-being?

You do expect miracles from using various drugs and supplements. However, girls, will you be happy to see hair growing on your face or have your voice getting lower? Boys, I am sure the last thing you want in your desire to become machos is infertility. I strongly believe that there should be strict rules and laws against using steroids. I am now at arming you with right information beforehand to prevent the tragedies that strike every day. Steroids should have no place either in sports or in our everyday lives!
